Shoe
Gallery
Normally, I'd start a gallery entry
with some kind of background
nonsense and a "Before" picture,
but not this time. This stuff is too
awesome to put at the bottom of
the page! About 20 people have
suggested destroying a shoe
with the Solar Death Ray, but I
didn't understood why until now:
Shoes Burn!

I'd also like to note that this
experiment was undertaken with
the
utmost regard for safety:
a bonafide Eagle Scout was
present as a fire safety officer.
We also got some water.
My shoe, an Airwalk (left), was composed primarily of leather and
rubber. I replaced this pair because the back wore out and started to
give me blisters, which is how all of my shoes tend to fail. But there is
another failure mode for shoes....
Because of the size of
the shoe, the death ray
was focused first on the
lower (heel) section. This
was a little boring, so we
refocused on the upper
(toe) section. The leather
in the toe region burned
in typical death ray
fashion.

After about 5 minutes the
shoe transitioned from
"standard death ray
action" to
"Raging Inferno!!!"
"Standard"
"Raging Inferno!!!"
During the "Raging Inferno"
phase, the bulk of the
shoe-destroying power was from
the combustion of rubber, not the
usual 112 suns. The shoe burned
fast and hot, as might be
expected from an Airwalk.
Normally, I'd finish with an "After"
photo, but the only thing left was
a crescent of material I think was
part of the toe.

I think the moral of the story is:
Don't Play With Fire Or Shoes!
